She was leaning forward, lips animated, wagging her finger directly in his face. Coach Mike was a bit off-balance from the verbal assault. I was waiting in my car as I watched the drama unfold. Her lips were moving rapidly but were unable to hear a single word.
To my knowledge, no one had ever talked to the coach in this manner. He was one of those guys who liked to win, pushed the kids hard, and was quite directive. Since I was her ride home, she stepped into my car and I asked, “what that was all about?”
She said, “I told him he needed to give every girl a chance to play, not just the good ones. I told him the game was about a team effort and I was willing to give up my starter position or my playing time so other girls could play.” What did he say? “He didn’t say anything, he just looked at me”.
There comes a time in your life when a leader needs to step up and fight. Whether in defense of a position or advocacy for an issue. It’s a time when your heart motivates your brain to find the words and actions needed to make your point. What comes out may not be perfect, but it will be heard. Finding your voice is more than what emits from your mouth. It is your whole body sending a message.
If you watch a great singer, an accomplished actor, or a highly effective speaker, their “voice” is a total performance for the audience. When it is a new discovery or a first-time experience, we might say, “she has found her voice”. Have you found your voice or are you still searching? Have you located it, but not used it much? Maybe now is the time to discover it and own it as a powerful tool. The girl in my car found hers. And at that moment, I was so proud of my daughter.
